Tips for Staying Healthy

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Welcome back to the start of a fun, educational and exciting school year for your children.  In an effort to keep your children healthy both individually and as an entire school community, I encourage you to use the following guidelines for good health with your children:

  • Wash your hands frequently.   Instruct your child to wash his/her hands before coming to school and throughout the school day.
  • Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose whenever you cough or sneeze.  Dispose of the tissue and wash your hands immediately after use.
  • Keep your child home if he/she is not feeling well.  Follow up with his/her health care provider if you have questions or concerns about the illness.
  • Do not send your child to school with any fever (temperature of 100.0 F or over).  Do not use fever-reducing medications to send a child to school.  Contact your child’s health care provider for recommendations about the use of these medications.
  • Keep your child home for 24 hours after the fever is gone without the use of any fever-reducing medications.
  • Contact your or your child’s health care provider immediately if any family member experiences influenza-like illness symptoms: fever over 100.0 F; chills; cough; sore throat; runny or stuffy nose; body aches; headache; fatigue.
  • Inform the school nurse immediately if you learn your child has contracted the H1N1 flu (“swine” flu) or any other communicable disease.
